Meet our first pollutant of the week:
Source: acid mine drainage, acid sulphate soils, pH altering chemicals e.g. lime, ammonia, sulfur, ash
Impacts: environmental degradation, fish kills. Low pH can dissolve tissues and eggs, killing aquatic animals and preventing reproduction
One thing you can do: be aware of acid sulphate soils and manage appropriately
Typically Water Sensitive Urban Design focuses on just four main pollutants i.e. Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Sediment and Litter. There are however many more pollutants that can harm our waterways. This new education campaign aims to introduce a few of the more sinister characters we need to combat.
