Construction and Establishment of Vegetated Stormwater Systems

Date

Thursday 6 May 2010

Time

8.45am – 5.00pm

Venue

Brisbane CBD (TBC)

Course Outline

This one-day course provides detailed guidance on the construction and establishment of vegetated stormwater management systems in order to address the key issues faced during on-ground delivery. Stormwater management systems such as bioretention systems, wetlands and swales are now common elements in all new developments and infrastructure projects in SEQ. However they must be constructed and established effectively in order to realise the benefits. Correct construction and establishment can minimise construction costs and timeframes. The course will include an overview of the protocols that will guide the delivery of these systems into the future. The day will finish with a field trip to a bioretention basin. Please bring suitable attire (i.e. closed shoes and a hat) for the fieldtrip.

Key Learnings

  • Be aware of the key issues and risks that need to be considered when constructing and establishing bioretention systems and wetlands.
  • Have an appreciation of the importance of construction phase sediment and erosion control practices and their relationship with operational phase stormwater management systems.
  • Have an understanding of specifications and materials (i.e. bioretention filter media specification).
  • Be aware of construction methods and approaches for bioretention systems and wetlands.
  • Understand the requirements for successful vegetation establishment.
  • Be provided with checklists and protocols that will inform construction and establishment.
