Concept Design of Water Sensitive Urban Developments

This one-day course will increase your knowledge and skills in the conceptualisation and development of design solutions that integrate sustainable urban management with the urban form. It offers a structured approach for ensuring that during the urban development process opportunities for best practice water management are harnessed and risk of non-compliance with emerging legislation and planning requirements are minimised.

You will enhance your knowledge of the conceptual design process through learning about key design approaches for water sensitive developments, roles of different members of a design team in developing and delivering designs, and best planning and management practices. Water supply, wastewater and stormwater aspects will be covered. During the day you will participate in hands-on design activities to apply the knowledge learnt.

This course compliments the “Concept Design Guidelines for Water Sensitive Urban Design” (Water by Design, 2009).

This course is presented by Malcolm Eadie, Tony Dickson and Andrew Neighbour.

By the end of this course participants will:

  • Have a strong understanding of the conceptual design process and roles for different discipline during each stage of the process (associated risk and costs).
  • Have an appreciation of the benefits of water sensitive urban design (WSUD) and the need to incorporate it appropriately throughout the conceptual design process.
  • Be able to utilise the “Conceptual Design Guidelines for Water Sensitive Urban Design” to undertake WSUD in a range of development types.
  • Be aware of the legislative framework covering WSUD in SEQ.
  • Know how to apply WSUD at a range of scales and development types.
  • Have a good understanding of urban design principles for WSUD.
  • Have a good understanding of the different WSUD technologies and their most appropriate applications.
