WSUD Action Plan

The Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) Action Plan is a key component of  the SEQ Healthy Waterways Strategy 2007 – 2012

The purpose of the Strategy is to deliver a range of outcomes essential to maintaining and improving the health of SEQ’s waterways, including Moreton Bay. It contains over 500 actions that the SEQ Healthy Waterways Partners have committed, either individually or in cooperation, to deliver.

What does Water by Design do?

The scope of the Water by Design program

The urban water cycle includes the three water streams: potable water, wastewater and stormwater, as illustrated in Figure 1 below. The natural water cycle includes catchments, streams, rivers, lakes, estuaries and marine waters.

The Water by Design program supports the management of the whole urban water cycle in order to achieve sustainable development, including protecting and restoring the natural water cycle. Importantly, the program is not limited to managing urban stormwater.

Current Activities

Tools & Resources for Water Sensitive Urban Design 

A number of tools and resources to assist practitioners design, construct and implement water sensitive urban design have been or are being developed by the Water by Design Program. While these tools and resources have been tailored to South East Queensland they are relevant around Australia.

What is Water Sensitive Urban Design?

Water sensitive urban design (WSUD) is an approach to the planning and design of urban environments that supports healthy ecosystems, lifestyles and livelihoods through smart management of all our waters.

The National Water Commission defines water sensitive urban design as ensuring "…that urban water management is sensitive to natural hydrological and ecological cycles. It integrates urban planning with the management, protection and conservation of the urban water cycle".
